20th Century in Literature and Culture: Round Table
The Round Table “20th Century in Literature and Culture” was organized by the 20th Literature Department of the Russian State Pedagogical University (Herzen University) and the Nabokov Museum.
Its participants gathered in the Library of the Nabokov House to discuss:
Russian 20th Century literature and culture as a unique phenomenon;
Russian 20th century literature as a wholesome aesthetic system, which includes literature of the Silver Age and the Russian emigration, Soviet and “recovered” literature, and literature of the Post-Soviet period.
The multitude and variety of artistic movements, methods, discoveries, and experiments in the 20h Century literature and culture.

’Reality’ of the Text: Nabokov’s Metaphysics: Round Table
The broad specter of philosophical ideas and problems, as reflected in the art of Vladimir Nabokov, became the main theme of the discussion. Round table participants also focused on Nabokov's concept of the “other world,” which for some time has been the focal point of Nabokov studies in Russia and in the West.
Brian Boyd (Auckland University, New Zealand), Nabokov's biographer and author of several books of literary criticism, led the discussion.

The thematic purpose of “Nabokov and Germany” was to define the influence German culture had on the art of Vladimir Nabokov, who lived in Germany in the 1920s and 30s, and to re-create the image of Germany of that period. On a broader scale, the program was meant to reflect German and Russian cross-cultural influences and interactions.
The “Nabokov and Germany” program was of interest both to Nabokov scholars and other specialists in literature and to a broader audience.- October 22: “Vladimir Nabokov in Germany” documentary exhibition opened at the Nabokov Museum.
• The “Light and Twilight of Exile” exhibition of rare books and periodicals opened at the Russian National Library.
• “The Heaven of Lost Shadows,” Parts One and Two. Two evenings of German films from the 1920s and 30s at the “Parisiana” Movie Theater.
• “King, Queen, Knave” theater production at the Lensoveta Theater.
• “Soulspinning” theater production at the Nabokov Museum (actors from the Alxandrinsky Drama Theater).
• “Wing-Stroke: Stories written by V. Nabokov in Berlin,” Parts One and Two. Two theater productions at the Nabokov Museum.
• International Academic Conference “Nabokov and Germany” at the Nabokov Museum.
• “Nabokov and Mimicry,” lecture by Dieter Zimmer, Germany, at the Nabokov Museum.

Alexander Pushkin and Vladimir Nabokov: International Conference
The “A. S. Pushkin and V. V. Nabokov” International Conference was organized by the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskiy Dom) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Nabokov Foundation. It took place at the Puskinskiy Dom and at the library in Siverskaya, near Gatchina. Conference proceedings were published in: Pushkin and Nabokov: Materialy mezhdunarodnoi nauchnoi konferentsii, 15-18 aprelya 1999. - St.Petersburg: Dorn, 1999.
